About RIMS

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), established on 14 September 1972, is the premier medical teaching and tertiary-care institution of Manipur and the North-Eastern region. An autonomus institute under the MoHFW, Govt of India, has over 1,200 beds, a full spectrum of specialties and superspecialties, and recognised undergraduate, postgraduate and M.Ch./DM programmes, RIMS plays a central role in delivering high-quality healthcare, medical education and research for the region. It is 13th Centre of Excellence for treatment of rare diseases in the country. It routinely conducts wide variety advanced procedures like renal transplant, open heart surgires, cardiac stents, brain and spinal tumourr, knee replacements etc. It has a Level 1 Trauma centre and a Burn centre under the national trauma and Burns Program.

 The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is one of the major superspecialty units of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. Its foundations were laid in 1984, when the discipline began as a Plastic Surgery Unit under the pioneering leadership of Professor G. N. Sharma, whose vision, dedication, and academic drive were instrumental in shaping the specialty in the region. From modest beginnings, he nurtured the unit and guided its evolution into a full-fledged superspecialty department offering an MCh degree in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

He was later joined by Dr. Kh. Palin, whose contributions strengthened both clinical services and training. In 1996, Dr. Nepram Sanjib Singh joined the department, adding further momentum to its growth with his expertise and commitment to patient care and academic activity.

The department is presently headed by Professor A. K. Ibohal Singh, who joined in 2013. Under his leadership, the department continues to expand in scope, infrastructure, and academic output, while maintaining the highest standards of surgical care. He is supported by a dedicated team of faculty members, including Assistant Professors Dr. P. Manisana and Dr. Angelica L., who contribute actively to clinical services, postgraduate training, and research.

Over the decades, the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at RIMS has grown into a centre of excellence, providing comprehensive reconstructive, aesthetic, trauma, microsurgery, burns, and hand surgery services to the people of Manipur and the Northeast region, while also playing a vital role in training the next generation of plastic surgeons.

It provides advanced reconstructive, trauma, burn, craniofacial, hand and aesthetic surgical care. Plastic surgery services at RIMS have grown rapidly with increasing patient load, modern infrastructure, and expansion of academic programmes, culminating in the establishment of a full-fledged M.Ch. Plastic Surgery programme in 2010.

Infrastructure & Facilities

State-of-the-Art Modular OT Complex inaugurated on 21 February 2025 for Plastic Surgery and Burns, equipped with laminar airflow and enhanced sterility systems. TRhe department is equipped with ZEISS OPMI VARIO microscopes, loupes, Aesculap Microsurgery set, Advanced equipments for Faciomaxillary surgery and craniofacial distraction. It has Microaire Liopsuction set with equipments for fat injection.  The institute also has LASERs of various kinds. It has a 5 bedded ICU. It also is equipped with an HBOT unit with 5 chambers.
